The price of Ambivalence is Moral Weakness
Ambivalence means uncertainty over a course of action or decision and implies weakness. The Democrats are guilty of ambivalence and it is being interpreted by many, including myself, as moral weakness.
Besides Robert Byrd ~ where are the voices of dissent ?
Have we become a nation of cowards ?
Sidney Hall Jr in COMMON DREAMS says the same thing ;
" There is a President , who, in reaction to the devastation of 9/11 ~ does not act with forbearance, curiosity to understand the root cause , and as a world leader . Instead he lashes out at blurry targets with more force than we were met with . This is not a brave man .
There are many Senators who see their country yawing dangerously off course and, for the first time in its history abusing its power openly and shamelessly. They say nothing , though they know better , because they are afraid of an emotional backlash and they may lose the next election.
There are the citizens who succumb to fear , and believe every scary story they hear ~ sealing their doors and windows with duct tape and knowing , rationally, that they are in more danger by getting into their car.
There are the journalists who refuse to show the thousands of innocent civilians killed and maimed by our bombs ~ so that people can weigh the consequences of war for themselves . Instead they report every " coalition " news release as gospel truth .
In the heart of every American there is a bravery waiting to emerge. If someone would come along who would call on that bravery ~ if another Martin Luther King came suddenly into our midst ~ you would see a bravery flower everywhere overnight ."
The root cause of terrorism is economic and political despair and disfranchisement.
We cannot bomb terrorism into extinction . We can only overcome it through altruism and social cooperation with our growing community of nations who have witnessed and lived through far more social, economic and political injustice than ourselves.
We have given War a chance and it failed as seen in Riyadh a few days ago. Al-qaida had drawn many more recruits despite the present administrations claim of victory.
Bravery is not smashing an already weakened Nation ~ such as Iraq , into chaos, despair and civil strive.
Bravery is pulling on our moral values that founded our constitution as well as the United Nations ~ and having the courage to live it on a world stage with honesty and moral goodness .
Once again, the price of ambivalence is moral weakness and the presidential candidate who hoists the banner of peace ,social cooperation and moral goodness will not only see bravery flower everywhere overnight but will carry the day in 2004.
